Bird Week 2005

With the threatened Gouldian Finch making inroads into the Mary River area, in a flock of over 500, Bird Week 2005 was an outstanding affair.

Mike Ostwald has enthralled visitors with his local knowledge of the birds and ecosystems.

Among the special species viewed have been the  Chestnut Rail, Rufous Owls, Rainbow Pittas,  Mangrove Golden Whistler,Great-billed Heron, the white phase of the Grey Goshawk, the Black Bittern, the Australian Bustard, the Gouldian Finches, 21 species of raptors including the Red Goshawk, the Hooded Parrots and many, many species of shore and water birds. 

As visiting guest speaker, Dr Don Franklin from Darwin, provided expert insights into the habits of the Gouldian Finches.
