Driving around the Top End

Whether your holiday is just beginning or nearly at its end, there is no better way to get to know the "Top End".

Driving in the Northern Territory can be a holiday in itself. The main roads and highways to the Top End's most popular attractions are fully sealed, making them suitable for an average family car, car and caravan, or commuter buses.

You will find service stations and rest spots along these main roads. Mary River Park is on the Arnhem Highway, 77km off the Stuart Highway and 32km from Kakadu National Park.

There are no speed limits on the Arnhem Highway, so stay alert and drive at a speed you are comfortable with.

As you are driving toward Mary River Park from Darwin, you will notice the everchanging landscapes. Enjoy the woodlands when you turn onto the Arnhem Highway.

Turn left on the sealed road to visit Fogg Dam, a bird watchers and nature lovers' paradise. Take a simple drive across the old dam wall and visit the information  booth or spend a few hours walking the bushwalking trails in search of such birds as the Rainbow Pitta. Look in amazement to find wetlands on each side of you as you approach "Windows on the Wetland" (a visit here is a must, and entry is FREE).

A few minutes past the Adelaide River  flood plains
( watch out for the brolgas) find the  turn off to the  right to the Leaning Tree Nature Park , a beautiful billabong is found only 300 m or so from the highway which is covered in white waterlilies and lots of birdlife. A great stop for photos or a picnic under a tree
.

Continue on and come face to face with giant termite mounds - a perfect photo opportunity. Now, you are well on your way to Mary River Park.

As soon as you cross the Mary River, turn right and follow the palm bordered driveway to our guests car park and reception area.

You are now free to take time-out and appreciate the diversity of the landscapes you saw on your drive in.

We offer accommodation, camping, river cruises, 4WD tours, and woodland, grassland or wetland bushwalks that are perfect for birdwatching or simply being close to nature.

Meals are country hospitality at its best - homestyle meals are served in our tropical design dining room overlooking the woodlands. Meal times are flexible, and are adjusted to suit guests leaving or returning on tours away from Mary River Park.

We have various tours available for guests to explore the spectacular landscapes and migratory birdlife. Tour options will vary according to the time of year.
